Christ-followers Respond Massively to Haiti's Crisis & Others

haiti_news_iconChristians are assessing, networking, preparing and responding in big numbers to Haiti's crisis, as well as to others, big and small  - Thank you! While we may feel far away from the Haitian Island and all the devastation, the fact is a catastrophic event could happen in your city.  This is a wake-up call for Christians to be biblically ready.  Would you be ready?  Find out by taking the Readiness Profile.  CEN communicates and collaborates with many Christians who help get organizations and churches to meet needs with a biblically unified prayer-care-share response.

What Can you Do to Respond?

  • Take steps to be a Ready Christian - this will prepare you personally to face and respond to adversities of all sizes
  • Help your house of worship be a Ready Church
  • Help establish CEN Chapters to equip local Christian churches and ministries to respond effectively with local emergency management systems - trained local responders are key!
  • Donate to Christian response ministries (be sure to check out your own denomination's disaster efforts planned for Haiti) or to establish a local CEN chapter in your community
  • Learn how social networking methods are working within this crisis; you may need to use these systems in an emergency some day

Be Aware of God at Work...and of Reports Coming out of Haiti (many specific needs to pray for!).
These are just a few of the sources:

  • The Salvation Army (TSA) - Present in Haiti since the 50's with 60 centers; awaiting ground help from TSA in the Turks and Caicos Islands since air space was limited to military transport (limitations may still be occurring); TSA's Director of Disaster Services in Haiti has his own personal earthquake story; money coming in to help from many of you!
  • Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) Rapid Response Teams - Meeting the emotional, spiritual and physical needs via trained chaplains that began to arrive yesterday
  • Christian Aid Mission - Assists 700+ overseas missionary missions that evangelize, plant churches and teach the Bible
  • Mission Network News - researching and airing many interviews with key mission groups greatly affected by this disaster
  • Samaritan's Purse - Mobilized overnight to providing shelter, clean water and medical help along with staff
  • Hopegivers International - One of the many mission organizations with a presence in Haiti; staff there believed to be safe thus far
  • Texas Baptist Men - flying water purification systems to Haiti
  • Faith and Action - A Christian mission to government officials in Washington, D.C.; president of this mission says the Ambassador of Haiti is an evangelical Christian and son of a Baptist minister, and previously worked to head up the Bible translation team that produced the first New Testament in the Haitian Creole language
  • Somebody Cares International (SCA) - Working with its area churches and its Caribbean chapter to set up relief bases, moblizing prayer efforts
  • Feeding the Nations - Purchasing portable water systems, providing food, helping a large church with its schools and orphanages
  • Victim Relief Ministries - reports 45,000 Americans were on the island with AID or mission work groups; sending email updates
  • Department of Homeland Security - Aid and patrol planes deployed; all military branches are responding with assets
  • Convoy of Hope - This Assemblies of God response ministry reports its missionaires appear to be safe; they are assembling funds, volunteers and materials
  • Touch Global - The Evangelical Free Church's disaster response efforts are in swing, with ongoing efforts to contact its personnel there
  • Nazarene Disaster Response -  Social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) are being used to get in touch with personnel; many response efforts are being launched
  • Wesleyan Disaster Response - Denomination is calling for a church-wide day of fasting and prayer among its churches between Jan. 17 and Jan. 24; many other resposne efforts are in the plans
  • Operation Blessing (Christian Broadcasting Network's Disaster Response Team) - Reports miracles unfolding amidst the tragedy
  • Christian Broadcasters are being asked by Compassion International (that has many sponsored children and staff in Haiti) to postpone a previously scheduled National Food Crisis on-air fundraising day, and instead do a Broadcasters for Haiti on-air fundraising day February 1.  The mainstream National Association of Broadcasters group is suggesting all TV/Radio do the same.  National Religious Broadcasters has petitioned the FCC to waive some on-air fundraising regulations to accommodate this quick effort.
